Trump Says US Will End Annual Israel Aid by Year-End

President Donald Trump has said the United States will stop its annual financial aid to Israel by the end of this year, pointing to a prior arrangement made with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Speaking to Fox News' Fox and Friends as voting began in the midterm elections, Trump said: "We give Israel $4bn a year, and we made a deal months ago that we're stopping. By the end of this year we won't be paying Israel. Now we'll help Israel if they need it." He did not clarify what form any future assistance might take.

The announcement comes at a turbulent moment for US-Israel relations. In July, the US House of Representatives defeated a measure to cut off aid to Israel by a vote of 314 to 104, though nearly half of all Democrats backed the amendment.

The vote reflects a shift away from decades of consistent bipartisan support for Israel in Washington.
