Trial Date Finally Set in Lassana Cisse Murder Case

A trial date has finally been set for Lorin Scicluna in connection with the murder of Lassana Cisse, more than seven years after the 42-year-old was fatally shot in Ħal Far.

Proceedings are scheduled to begin on Monday 19th October 2026. Cisse, a migrant worker and father of two from the Ivory Coast, was killed on the night of 6th April 2019 whilst walking back to the Ħal Far Open Centre after watching a football match in Birżebbuġa.

Two other migrants, Ibrahim Bah and Mohammed Jallow, were also injured in the attack. The case is widely regarded as the first racially motivated murder in Maltese history.

Off-duty AFM soldiers Francesco Fenech and Lorin Scicluna were arrested and charged in May 2019, facing counts of murder and attempted murder. Both pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution concluded presenting its evidence in June 2021, whilst Cisse's remains were repatriated to the Ivory Coast in July 2022, more than three years after his death. Seven years on, the case is now moving towards a courtroom verdict.
