Tesla Unveils New ‘Rocket Car’ That Can Flip Through the Air
Tesla has shown off an updated Roadster capable of briefly lifting off the ground, but questions remain over how practical the "flying car" technology really is.
Tesla has revealed an updated version of its Roadster sports car that is capable of briefly lifting off the ground. During a demonstration held in Texas, the driverless vehicle was driven up a ramp, launched into the air using high-pressure jets, and landed again. It also flew over a row of parked Tesla cars.
The car reportedly uses ten openings to discharge pressurised air, allowing it to elevate itself and reach higher speeds. Elon Musk, Tesla's Chief Executive, claimed it can accelerate from 0 to 96 kilometres per hour in under one second. Musk added that production is expected to begin in 2028.
Whilst the demonstration drew significant attention, a number of questions remain unanswered. It is not yet clear whether the vehicle can sustain flight over any meaningful distance or whether its airborne capability is limited to a brief jump. Musk himself acknowledged uncertainty over whether the technology would perform as intended in real-world conditions.
Experts have pointed to considerable obstacles ahead, citing weight limitations and safety concerns as key barriers to making flying cars viable for everyday use. Progress in the sector continues, but practical, road-ready airborne vehicles remain some way off.
