Serbian Police Shoot Dead Attacker Outside Israeli Embassy After Suspected Terrorism
A suspected attacker was shot dead by Serbian police outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade after targeting an officer with two knives while shouting "Allahu Akbar". Authorities have since raised the country's terror alert to its highest level.
Serbian police shot and killed a suspected attacker outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade on Wednesday after the individual targeted a police officer with two knives while shouting "Allahu Akbar". The assailant, described as a minor whose identity had not been established at the time, was shot dead by the officer in what Interior Minister Ivica Dacic called an act of self-defence.
The officer sustained only light wounds. The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the incident, stating that no embassy personnel were harmed and that the mission had been closed at the time.
Serbian security services had reportedly been monitoring the suspect, who Dacic said had publicly displayed support for the Islamic State group on social media.
In response to the incident, Serbian authorities raised the country's terror alert to its highest level, ordering tighter security checks and an increased police presence at sensitive sites and public gathering spaces.
The attack occurred just days after Serbia's parliamentary elections, in which a youth-led movement unseated the long-dominant political camp of former President Aleksandar Vucic, though his allies retain control of the police while a new government has yet to be formed.
