NSO Data Shows Sharp Rise in Malta Youth Unemployment

New figures from the National Statistics Office show that 2,714 young people aged between 15 and 24 were classified as unemployed in August 2026, pushing Malta's youth unemployment rate to 9.7 per cent.

That figure represents a rise of nearly 700 compared to the same month in 2025. The gap between age groups is stark. Unemployment among those aged 25 to 74 stood at just 2.9 per cent, whilst young people made up 22.7 per cent of Malta's total unemployed population despite representing a far smaller share of the workforce.

Overall, Malta's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate reached 3.4 per cent in August, up from 2.5 per cent a year earlier. Economist Professor Philip von Brockdorff has pointed to low levels of qualifications and skills as a key factor behind elevated youth unemployment. The total number of unemployed people across all age groups reached 11,973 in August, with male unemployment sitting at 3.5 per cent and female unemployment at 3.3 per cent.
