Nationalist Party Files Constitutional Case Against PBS

The Nationalist Party has launched constitutional proceedings against Public Broadcasting Services, arguing that the national broadcaster has consistently failed to meet its legal obligations on political balance and impartiality.

The case was announced at a press conference outside the law courts. At the heart of the PN's argument is a significant disparity in airtime. Figures drawn from a parliamentary question covering June 2025 to May 2026 show PBS news bulletins featured 532 sound-on-tape clips of the Prime Minister or government representatives, against just 66 for the Opposition Leader or opposition figures.

The party noted it had been raising concerns on this front for roughly three years. The proceedings will also challenge impartiality standards in current affairs programming. PN official Justin Schembri said comments made by presenter Ricky Caruana would be submitted as evidence, whilst stressing the case targets broader systemic issues rather than any single individual.

The party's position is that Broadcasting Authority rulings have repeatedly identified shortcomings without producing meaningful change. Whether the courts will find sufficient grounds to compel action from PBS remains to be seen. Is the current oversight framework strong enough to hold public broadcasters to account?
