MUMN Warns Budget Fees Could Worsen Malta's Nursing Shortages
The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses has warned that new Budget fees targeting third-country nationals could worsen staffing shortages in healthcare and elderly care, and is seeking an urgent meeting with Health Minister Ian Borg.

The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) has raised concerns that new Budget measures targeting third-country nationals could deepen staff shortages across Malta's healthcare and elderly care sectors.
The union argues that hospitals and care homes already rely heavily on third-country national nurses to keep services running. It cautioned that making Malta a less financially attractive destination for foreign nursing staff could place further pressure on an already stretched workforce, and could also put the opening of new healthcare facilities at risk.
MUMN is calling on the government to exempt third-country national nurses from the additional charges. It has also requested an urgent meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Ian Borg, with the aim of presenting its proposals before the measures come into effect.
