Man Granted Bail After Qormi Firearms Standoff and Assault Charges

A 43-year-old man has been released on bail following a domestic incident in Qormi that triggered the deployment of two specialised police units.

The accused faces multiple charges, including assaulting his partner, damaging her property, and several breaches of firearms regulations. Officers were initially called to the scene after the woman reported being struck by her partner during an argument. The situation escalated when it emerged that the accused had locked himself inside a bedroom armed with a Beretta firearm and was reportedly threatening to take his own life.

Attempts by a senior officer to reach him by megaphone and mobile phone were unsuccessful before the Rapid Intervention Unit and Special Intervention Unit entered the property. In court, the woman testified that she had contacted police out of concern for her partner rather than to have him charged. She stated she still loved him and did not wish to pursue the case.

The prosecution raised no objection to bail, and the magistrate granted the request. A protection order and the confiscation of the firearm have been requested in the event of a conviction. The accused also faces charges of breaching the conditions of his firearms licence, failing to obey lawful police orders, and committing the alleged offences whilst subject to an operative probation order, with the prosecution additionally noting a previous conviction.
