Maltese Man Fined €3,700 After Drink-Drive Crash in Kalkara
Joseph Cini has been fined €3,700 and banned from driving for a year after a late-night crash in Kalkara that destroyed a family's garage and damaged several vehicles.
Joseph Cini was found guilty on several charges, including drink-driving, careless and reckless driving, and causing damage to cars and motorcycles, following a collision in Kalkara.
The incident took place on 20 October 2024 in Triq Santu Rokku at around 10.45pm. Cini's Mitsubishi struck a Toyota on the road before ploughing through a garage door and colliding with a Mercedes, a Pajero, and two motorcycles belonging to a family.
A police sergeant present at the scene noted that Cini smelled of alcohol and refused to take a breathalyser test.
In court, the defence cited difficult personal circumstances at the time of the incident and noted that the accused's insurance had covered the damage. Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici acknowledged those circumstances but stressed that they did not excuse Cini from responsibility, adding that the victims had suffered shock, distress, and a significant loss of time.
Cini was acquitted only on the charge of failing to report the incident. Alongside the fine, he received a 12-month driving licence suspension and had 10 points deducted from his licence.
