Maltese Film Żejtune Wins 3 Awards in France and Eyes Oscars Nomination
Maltese film Żejtune has picked up three awards in France, expanded its international run to 50 cinemas, and been chosen as Malta's submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.
Maltese film Żejtune has had a landmark week, picking up three awards at the Festival 2 Cinéma de Valenciennes in France, including the top honour, the Grand Prix Fictions. Lead actress Michela Farrugia took the Breakthrough Performance Award, whilst Nenu Borg was recognised as Best Actor.
The film's international run is expanding at a pace not previously seen for a Maltese production. It opened in France on 30th September and is currently screening across 50 French cinemas, a figure producer Oliver Mallia has described as a record for a Maltese film. It also premiered at Filmfest Hamburg last week.
Żejtune has now been selected as Malta's submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2027. It is worth noting that selection as Malta's entry does not constitute an official Oscar nomination.
Further screenings in Malta are also expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
