Malta Records EU's Largest Gender Gap in Suicide Rates

Eurostat data for 2023 shows Malta had the EU's widest gap between male and female suicide death rates, even as the country's overall suicide rate remained among the bloc's lowest.

Malta recorded the widest male-to-female suicide death rate gap of any EU member state in 2023, according to Eurostat data. Maltese men died by suicide at a rate eight times higher than women, far exceeding the EU-wide average ratio of 3.6.

Despite this disparity, Malta remained among the countries with the lowest overall suicide death rates in the bloc, registering six deaths per 100,000 inhabitants compared with the EU average of 10. The Netherlands recorded the smallest gender gap among member states, with its male suicide rate 2.4 times that of women.

The pattern of higher male suicide mortality held across all 27 EU member states, though the scale varied considerably by country. Lithuania recorded the largest absolute difference, with 34 deaths per 100,000 men against seven per 100,000 women.
