Libya Guarantees Lilu King Will Not Be Executed If Extradited

Libya has provided Malta with written guarantees that Mohamed Ali Elmushraty, known as Lilu King, will not face execution or torture if extradited to face murder and drug trafficking charges.

Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield confirmed that Malta is assessing Libya's extradition request after receiving the required human rights assurances. Justice Minister Alex Grima said he would approve the file once legal requirements were met. However, extradition would still require court proceedings, during which Elmushraty could challenge the request and appeal any ruling.

A further ministerial approval would also be necessary. Elmushraty remains in pre-trial detention in Malta over separate alleged organised crime, money laundering and sexual assault offences. He also had his refugee status revoked in September, raising questions over whether his local cases or extradition proceedings will take priority.
