Isaac Asare Pleads Not Guilty Over Miriam Azzopardi's Death

Isaac Asare, a 35-year-old resident of Marsa, has pleaded not guilty to two charges: the femicide of 47-year-old Miriam Azzopardi and the violent theft of a phone and other items.

The arraignment was heard before Magistrate Astrid May Grima, with Asare represented by legal aid lawyer Rachel Tua. Azzopardi, a Maltese woman from St Paul's Bay, was found dead in a field near Triq is-Salib tal-Marsa on Wednesday morning. An autopsy confirmed she died from strangulation, and the case was formally classified as a homicide by police.

Asare was arrested the same Wednesday evening after investigators traced him through CCTV footage in the area. No bail request was made by the defence, whilst prosecutors successfully sought a protection order for Azzopardi's family, who were present in court, including her son and two daughters. Do you think the justice system is doing enough to address femicide in Malta?
