GTA 6 Launch Could Cost US Economy $1 Billion

An economist in Barcelona has calculated that the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI could cost the US economy around $1 billion in a single day, though the figures behind the claim have not been independently verified.

A Barcelona-based economist has calculated that the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on 19 November 2026 could strip roughly $1 billion from US economic output in a single day. The projection is attributed to José García Montalvo of Pompeu Fabra University and rests on an assumption that approximately 1.5 million American workers will skip work on launch day.

The figure is built on a straightforward model: take the estimated number of absent workers, apply an average annual output of around $70,000 per person scaled to one day, and the shortfall lands close to $1 billion. That represents an estimated 2% dip in national output for that date. The calculation has since been picked up by outlets including The Hill and Fox 29 Philadelphia.

What the headlines have been slower to flag is that the underlying study has not been independently verified, and the 1.5 million worker figure has already been questioned by at least one news organisation. A separate claim, linking human resources platform BambooHR to a reported 9 to 17% spike in time-off requests for that date, has similarly circulated without confirmed sourcing.

This is not the first time a cultural event has been assigned a lost-productivity estimate, but it may be the first time a named academic at a university has applied formal economic modelling to a single video game release. Whether the number holds up or not, it signals how seriously the industry is now taken beyond gaming circles.
