Floriana Mayor Nigel Holland Allegedly Assaulted, Accused Remanded in Custody

A 39-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with assaulting, insulting and threatening Floriana mayor Nigel Holland during an incident in St Publius Street on Sunday evening at around 6.45pm.

Rittmar Hatherly pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo and was also charged with breaching the conditions of three separate bail decrees. Police were called to the scene and found both men present. No physical injuries were reported.

The prosecution noted that Hatherly appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time, and that CCTV footage recovered from the area reportedly shows Holland seated when Hatherly approached him. The defence requested bail, arguing that the CCTV footage had already been presented in court and that evidence had been documented, removing any realistic risk of interference. It was also noted that Holland had not sought to be treated as an injured party, and that Hatherly had contacted the mayor by phone to apologise following the incident.

Magistrate Farrugia Frendo nonetheless denied bail, citing the accused's criminal record. Do you think the court made the right call in refusing bail? Source: Newsbook
