Excavator Overturns as Road Collapses Near Tarxien Church
A road collapse near Tarxien parish church on Monday morning exposed a water-filled cavity that appears to have affected the church's foundations, overturning an excavator in the process. The operator escaped without injury, and the parish priest says remedial work is already under way.
A section of road adjacent to Tarxien's parish church gave way on Monday morning, exposing a water-filled cavity that appears to have compromised the church's foundations. An excavator involved in the works overturned during the collapse and was partially submerged, though the operator escaped without injury.
The incident occurred within an active construction zone, where a regeneration project has been under way since August 2025. Infrastructure Malta had originally set a completion date of end of 2026, but the deadline was pushed to early 2027 after the local council and community requested a three-month pause during the summer festa season.
Tarxien Parish Priest Christopher Ellul confirmed that remedial work is already under way to assess and address any further risk to the church structure. The collapse marks the latest in a series of setbacks for a project that has already faced delays tied to community concerns.
Infrastructure Malta has not yet commented on the incident.
