Domestic Violence Referrals Rise by 73% In Four Years

More than 1,900 referrals related to domestic violence were made to services run by the Foundation for Social Welfare Services in 2025, marking a 73 per cent increase compared to four years earlier.

The rise comes as the Foundation recorded its highest-ever caseload, handling over 27,300 cases involving almost 26,000 people across Malta and Gozo. The total represents a 5.2 per cent increase on the previous year, highlighting growing demand for social welfare support. Appoġġ dealt with more than 11,200 cases, the largest share of the Foundation’s workload, while the Child Protection Directorate handled 4,820.

Meanwhile, loneliness remained the most commonly reported concern on Supportline 179 for the fifth consecutive year, accounting for 31 per cent of genuine calls. With domestic violence referrals continuing to rise alongside broader demand for social services, questions remain over whether staffing, resources and support systems are keeping pace with the needs of victims.
