Civil Society Groups Accuse Valletta Council of Censorship Over Posters

Civil society organisations Repubblika and have accused Valletta's local council of blocking the annual display of commemorative posters for assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The groups say the council rejected their permit application without offering a workable alternative. For several years, two large posters have been displayed near City Gate during the first two weeks of October. This year's message, Justice Requires Action, marks the ninth anniversary of her assassination on 16 October 2017.

The council cited reservations for Notte Bianca and the Valletta Summit between 1 and 6 October as justification for the refusal. The groups dispute this reasoning, noting that Notte Bianca is an annual event that has never previously prevented the posters from going up. They say they proposed several alternative sites and requested a meeting, but received no reply.

The council, controlled by the Labour Party, had not publicly responded at the time of writing. Repubblika and have warned they will seek court protection if the council fails to engage, stating they will not allow this to become a precedent. Do you think the council's refusal amounts to censorship?
