Air Traffic Fault Cancels 10 Malta-Italy Flights
A technical fault in Italian air traffic control systems caused significant disruption across Rome and Milan airports on 16 October, with at least ten flights connecting Malta to Italy either cancelled or delayed.
The Italian Air Navigation Service Provider, ENAV, confirmed that anomalies were detected in its air traffic control data overnight. By 6am, the authority had begun rolling out measures to keep operations running safely, whilst ruling out any possibility of malicious activity. The disruption affected multiple routes.
Ryanair flights to and from Bergamo and Bologna were among those hit, alongside arrivals into Malta from Treviso and Turin. KM Malta Airlines flights from Rome Fiumicino and departures bound for Milan Linate were also caught up in the delays. ENAV stated it was still working to identify the root cause of the fault and restore systems to full capacity.
