2 Men Testify Against Accused Bank Impersonator Tammy Caruana

Two men testified this week that they lost thousands of euros after being targeted in an alleged bank impersonation scam, part of a case against 25-year-old Tammy Caruana, who is accused of defrauding around 200 people.

The first witness told the court he received a text message closely resembling official bank communication, followed by a phone call in which the accused allegedly asked for his password and directed him to click a link. Within minutes, two separate transfers had cleared €5,000 from his account. Bank of Valletta told him it could not reverse the transactions, and the matter remained unresolved until police contacted him roughly ten days before the hearing.

The second witness said he received a similar call on 21 November 2024, his birthday, from a number that appeared identical to BOV's. He provided account details, passwords and signatures, following instructions on the BOV app in the belief he was securing his accounts. The next day he discovered €2,750 had been taken, with only a small sum remaining frozen by the bank.

Both men filed police reports and said the bank was unable to recover their funds.

Caruana, from St Paul's Bay, has denied the allegations and was remanded in custody. She faces accusations spanning around 200 alleged victims.
