Scerri’s Troubling Past
Scerri has a long history of criminal activity, including his role in the 2015 Gaffarena property expropriation scandal.
At the time, Scerri worked for the Lands Authority and played a key part in the controversial deals involving businessman Mark Gaffarena. The scandal, exposed by media reports, involved huge sums of money and questionable government transactions.
In 2021, Scerri posted on social media, flaunting a Maserati, raising questions about the source of his wealth given his previous employment as a public official.
Political Ties and Shady Dealings
Scerri's family has strong political connections. Labour politician Clifton Grima employed both Scerri’s mother, Vicky, and his brother, Rainer, despite their shady history.
These ties have raised concerns over the use of public resources for political gain. Rainer Scerri, a prominent canvasser for Grima, has also been embroiled in several controversies.
Waterpolo Scandal and Rainer’s Alleged Threats
Rainer Scerri recently found himself in hot water after allegedly threatening an anti-doping official during a waterpolo match in July 2023.
He reportedly claimed to have influence over Sports Minister Clifton Grima and threatened to have the official transferred. Though Rainer denied the allegations, his reputation was further tarnished.
Rainer has a history of trouble, including multiple disciplinary actions in waterpolo, and a 2010 assault on a Neptunes team doctor during a match.
Minister Grima Distances Himself
Minister Clifton Grima has publicly distanced himself from the Scerri family’s actions, clarifying that Rainer is not his driver and had no influence over doping procedures.
Grima reaffirmed his commitment to sport integrity and pointed to his role in strengthening Malta’s anti-doping laws.
