"Sitwazzjoni tal biki"- Kyle Curmi Warns About Electric Car Charging Shortage
“Watch out when you buy an electric car,” warns season one finalist of Love Island, Kyle Curmi.
Curmi shared a series of stories advising his followers to be cautious before purchasing an electric car due to the shortage of charging ports around Malta.
Curmi criticised Transport Malta for not adding more charging ports despite numerous reports to the local council.
He emphasised that while electric cars are not inherently problematic and he would bless his own car after purchasing it, the lack of enforcement and charging bays has caused significant issues for electric car owners.
In his journey to find a charging port, Curmi highlighted the usage of parking bays across Malta, where many were occupied by cars parked without charging, with no penalties issued. He travelled from Ta’Xbiex to Kirkop, where he managed to charge his car for a few minutes at 4:43am before it stopped “due to a power surge,” describing the situation as one that “makes you cry.”
Statistics from earlier this year showed 372 charging points for 6,000 EVs, with a ratio of 16 cars per point. Malta has only 19 charging points per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the Netherlands’ 577.
Valletta leads with 14 charging points, while many localities have just 2. Despite adding 46 new points in 2023, progress has been slow. The government has announced plans to invest in 1,200 more charging pillars and issue tenders for their maintenance to improve accessibility and align with the Low Carbon Development Strategy.
