European Parliament President Roberta Metsola sent a clear message of unity and solidarity as she addressed the Ukrainian parliament and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Metsola arrived in the war torn country along with her attaches to deliver a message of support on behalf of their colleagues in Brussels. During her speech in the Ukrainian parliament, she stated clearly that Ukraine was ‘part of Europe’, a message of solidarity that many Ukrainian officials hope will reinforce their supply of Western arms and defensive equipment.
However Europe is not as united in their front against the Eastern giant’s aggression as Ukraine has hoped for due to heavy economic interdependence between the European bloc and the Russian federation.
With supplies of energy and food rising in price and Vladimir Putin demanding all oil be bought with Rubles, many are wondering how long will either Europe or Russia be able to hold out from this mutually destructive trade restriction.
It is noteworthy that Metsola’s visit was only made possible due to the recent securing of the capital by Ukrainian forces. Ukraine is reported to have regained control over some of its other lost territories.
