The association of psychiatrists (PAP) has described Mount Carmel Hospital as ‘not fit for purpose’ and called for a temporary mental health hospital to be built until government fulfills its promise to build a new hospital adjacent to Mater Dei.
Referring to the revealing first hand account “I Spent 8 Days In Mater Dei: This Is What I Saw” published on www.sidestreetmalta.com, PAP president Nigel Camilleri said that Malta desperately needs a new acute hospital which provides “a tranquil environment for patients and staff".
Camilleri also told Times of Malta that mental health patients are being treated as second class citizens and that stigma stifles their ability to speak up.
