Prison authorities have admitted to blocking a journalist’s number so that inmates would not be able to call him.
In reply to a complaint filed by the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM), the Corradino Correctional Facility operations director admitted that Peppi Azzopardi and Xarabank’s numbers have been blocked since 2017.
CCF said it would be ensuring that both numbers are unblocked from now on.
“In view of the fact that this decision was taken before the current leadership we are not in a position to give a reason why such a decision was taken,” CCF said.
While noting the fact that numbers would be unblocked, IGM condemned the prison authorities for what they labelled ‘outright censorship’.
