Pope Francis has become the first pope ever to endorse same-sex civil union laws, signalling a dramatic shift from the Vatican's previous stance.
“Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God,” Pope Francis said in a new documentary film called ‘Francesco’ which premiered at the Rome Film Festival on Wednesday.
“What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered... I stood up for that.”
The current pope’s position is unlike any of his predecessors who have always objected to same sex civil unions.
Is this a step in the right direction for the Catholic Church ?
