Former Vice President Joe Biden is currently leading the popular vote against President Trump by nearly four million votes, polling results have shown.
Winning the popular vote, however, does not secure the election. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes but still lost the election to Mr. Trump.
Indeed, Americans have voted for a Democrat president over a Republican one in each of the past 4 elections, and in 7 of the past 8.
The next American president must secure the electoral college vote - a body of electors chosen from each state to elect the president and vice president of the U.S.
