Bulgaria has enacted a law banning LGBTQ+ "propaganda" in schools, sparking widespread condemnation from human rights groups and activists. The law, passed by parliament with 159 votes in favor, prohibits the promotion or discussion of non-traditional sexual orientations and gender identities within the education system.
The amendment, proposed by the far-right Vazrazhdane party, defines "non-traditional sexual orientation" as any attraction not between persons of opposite sexes. The legislation has provoked protests and criticism from organisations like LevFem, Feminist Mobilisations, and the LGBTQ+ group Action, who rallied under the slogan "School for all! Let's stop the hate!"
Forbidden Colours, an EU-wide LGBTQ+ advocacy group, condemned the law as a direct assault on human rights and compared it to similar legislation in Russia and Hungary.
The European Commission has been urged to take action against Bulgaria for violating principles of equality and non-discrimination.
Bulgaria ranks low in LGBTQ+ freedoms, placing 38th out of 48 European countries in the latest Rainbow Map by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, with a score of 23.22%.
