Argentina Takes Major Step Towards Legalising Abortion

Argentina took a major step toward legalizing abortion on Friday, fulfilling an electoral promise made by President Alberto Fernández, who has made women’s rights a central focus of his government 🇦🇷

Currently, abortion in Argentina is only legal in cases of rape or lethal threat to a woman's life. The proposed law could legalize abortion in all cases up to 14 weeks.

The Chamber of Deputies of Argentina passed the bill with 131 votes in favor, 117 against and 6 abstentions. The bill now moves to the senate for a debate and vote.

If the bill is passed by the Senate, Argentina, will become only the fourth, and by far most populous South American country to legalize abortion 🌎
